You’ve seen them everywhere: flashing across billboards, tucked into the pages of your Sunday paper, all over the internet and TV. Omnipresent for the past 50 years, toll-free numbers have come to be regarded as the staple of a professional business. They’re also a neat proposal for customers – why would anyone pay for a call they can make for free?

Below, we’ll explore what kinds of companies will benefit from an American toll-free number, point out the privileges it entails, and help you choose the best service provider for your needs.

Navigate:

What Is a US Toll-Free Number?

Toll-free numbers are phone numbers that are free of charge for the caller. The party that receives the call handles the expenses. The US toll-free number list includes “classic” area code 800 as well as 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, and 833. The service is applicable for the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) countries: the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

What Area Codes Are Available for Toll-Free Numbers in the USA?

As the oldest, the 1-800 number is kind of the “Adam and Eve” of toll-free codes. However, as a business owner, there’s no need to think of “800” as a more reliable area code and hunt after it. All of the prefixes mentioned below are perfectly safe, reliable, and free for people making the call.

Here’s a list of nationally free-to-dial area codes:

Why are there so many toll-free prefixes? The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is the governing and regulatory authority for US toll-free numbers. When the 800 code, in use since the 1960s, became nearly used up, the FCC created two new options in the 90s: 888 and 877. As their popularity grew, new codes 866,855,844, and 833 were added in the years 2000-2017. These codes are the most widely- available 800 numbers today. New codes 822, 880-887, and 889 are supposedly next in line.

When Do You Need a USA 800 Number for Business?

Secure your professional identity – For decades, these “fancy” telephone numbers were monopolized by large businesses. Today, they are widely available, but customers’ mentality is still the same old – we instantly associate toll-free calls with reputable, professional companies.

Beat the competition – Anyone here doesn’t like free goods? The perk of 800 and other similar phone numbers is that they’re free on the callers’ end. This makes customers twice as likely to dial your number than that of a competitor.

Create a customer base in the USA – Let’s say you’re an overseas online store and need a virtual presence in America. These numbers will make it simple for your customers to contact customer support or other departments just like they would for a business in their own area.

Increase customer experience – Customers love to pay less and get more. That’s exactly what you offer them with this free option. Not only does this help with attracting new clients, but it also retains existing ones who are more likely to contact you again for free.

Keep personal and business numbers separate – With a national phone number, you can route calls to any device. At the same time, you’ll instantly see when someone’s calling your business line.

Get other professional phone features – As part of a business phone system, national free-to-dial numbers come with dozens of team and customer-oriented features that make them an incredible deal for growing a business.

How Do You Get a Toll-free Number in the USA?

 2. Choose a country – North American Number Plans work with phone numbers with toll-free codes in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean. If you need a number for another country, look into international numbers.

Do I Need to Provide Special Documentation to Get an American Toll-Free Number?

National regulations backed by the FCC require all USA toll-free numbers for business to undergo verification to be able to send SMS. This is a recent measure taken to protect users against phone scams. Your provider will instruct you on how to fill out the verification form when you get a new phone number.

How Do You Transfer Your Existing Phone Number to MightyCall?

Some business owners already have an American toll-free number but would like to switch to another provider without losing their company identity – that is, the number already associated with their company and familiar to customers. The reasons for this range from a more cost-effective option to a provider that’s more scalable, team-oriented, or offers more built-in integrations.

Whatever your reasons for switching providers, you can port your number easily. At MightyCall, number porting is completely free and consists of just a few steps, most of which are on us:

 1. Collect the information from your current provider – This includes the account owner’s full name, the service address, and the PIN. If you don’t know the PIN, contact your provider.
 2. Send the porting request to MightyCall – In addition to the above, we’ll need your email under the MightyCall account, and the LOA – Letter of Authorization.
 3. Wait 7-14 days – Most porting requests are completed in around a week but may take longer depending on your current provider.

That’s it! You’re then free to enjoy your old number with a bunch of new benefits!

How Do American Toll-Free Numbers Work?

As a caller: If you’re dialing a US toll-free number, the main difference for you is no long-distance charges. Whether you’re calling from a neighboring state or from across the country, the call is free unless otherwise stated. However, note that these types of numbers were designed for use with landlines, so if you’re dialing them from a mobile phone, you’ll still incur roaming charges.

For business owners: With a US virtual number provider like MightyCall, you just pay a flat monthly fee for your number, and that includes unlimited calling minutes per month (on Business plan and higher). Plus, you don’t just get the number, but a unified business phone system. This modern platform includes tons of features to complement your number – like call routing to any device (like the one you’re reading this from right now), call menus, IVR and Multi-Level IVR, voicemail-to-text, call screening, and CRM integrations.

US Toll-Free Number Format

The dialing format for any toll-free number in the USA is standard. It consists of 11 digits. You can dial these numbers on landlines, mobile phones, and via certain online apps like Skype or Viber. (Here’s how, if you’re wondering)

To dial, enter the following on your dial pad:

 • The +sign
 • The country code (e.g. “1” for the USA)
 • The toll-free prefix (e.g. “800” or similar)
 • The 7-digit local number (e.g. “123-4567”)

For example, here’s our own number that includes all of the components above:
+1 (888) 256-8312

Who Pays for a Call to a USA Toll-Free Phone Number?

Many people ask themselves – is 1800 toll-free in the USA? Generally, calls to 800 numbers in the USA are paid for by the recipient of the call – for example, the business or organization to whom the number is assigned. For a business, this is usually a fixed monthly charge, so don’t worry about getting fluctuating bills every month. However, there’s a catch for callers: these numbers are free only when dialed from a landline. Mobile operators will still charge the caller for airtime, unless you have an unlimited minutes plan.

What’s the Difference Between Toll-free, Local, and Vanity Numbers?

A USA toll-free number means a number with the 800 or similar prefix that’s free to dial for callers.. Such a number is valuable for online businesses, national companies, and non-profit organizations. Businesses purchase a toll-free number in the USA to attract callers from out of state since they won’t have long-distance charges.

A local number is a number with a local area code (like 212 for Manhattan). Most states have several local codes, so you can choose the one that’s closest to your community. These numbers are great for local businesses and practices, local non-charity organizations, and other community services.

A vanity number is a number that spells a word. The letters can form the complete number, like “FLO-WERS”, or part of it, like “567-CATS”. These numbers can be paired with both local and toll-free codes. These numbers are easy to remember and are often seen on billboards.

Benefits of Getting a 1-800 Number in the United States

When you decide to buy a 1-800 number in the USA, it’s one of those technologies that you invest in today and they stay with you forever. Or well, until the end of the internet.

 • Quantity that grows into quality – The more people call your business, the more clients you get. Meanwhile, if they have a choice between doing it for free and paying, guess where their loyalty is going to lie.
 • New growth opportunities – Scaling is simple. You can grow into a nationwide (and even international) business without having to adjust your numbers later on and lose customers in the process.
 • Single business phone line – Even if you have several offices in different locations, you can keep them under a single roof with one national telephone number
 • Marketing campaigns – These numbers may be used as efficient marketing tools since they have a national presence. For example, you can use the texting option for SMS marketing campaigns.
 • Accessible for your entire team – Everyone on your team can have their own extension and access to the team dashboard for managing all business communications
 • No hardware needed – With a VoIP toll-free number in the USA number there’s no hardware like desk phones to buy. You can make and receive calls on practically any device you’re using.

What Is Required for the Implementation of US Toll-Free Service, Including Equipment?

If you’re wondering how to get a toll-free number in the USA with minimum hassle, start with these:

 • US toll-free number provider – To set up a reliable, cost-effective service, most businesses use Voice over IP (VoIP) services. Unlike with landlines, with VoIP, you don’t need any hardware, special equipment, or long-term contracts.
 • Fast internet – VoIP utilizes an internet connection to handle calls. You cannot have an internet-based number without a stable internet service – Wi-Fi, mobile, or cable.
 • Device for making and receiving calls – Most providers allow you to use any internet-powered device. This includes your cell phone, tablet/iPad, laptop or PC, an IP phone, or a VoIP adaptor that transforms your regular desk phone into an internet-connected device.
 • Softphone (Optional) – this is completely up to you to use or not. However, you’ll need a softphone to make calls from the desktop on your laptop or PC.

Types of Toll-Free Numbers in America

There are several USA toll-free number types you can get if you want customers to get through to you without paying extra.

Domestic toll-free numbers

These types of numbers are country-specific area codes. In the United States, they are covered by the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), also active in Canada, and the Caribbean. Getting US toll-free numbers generally implies such numbers for domestic use in North America.

Vanity toll-free numbers

These types of numbers combine the vanity number option with the toll-free area code. This is a win-win for potential customers: the letters spelling out a word of your choice make the number memorable, while the area code provides free calling. The most famous example of such a number is 1800-FLOWERS.

International toll-free numbers

You can also purchase country-specific numbers that will make calls from that country to your number free. For example, if you have a company branch in Paris, you can get a French toll-free area code. This is a great option for companies that have customers or office branches in specific world regions.

Important Points About 800 Numbers in USA

How much do USA toll-free numbers cost?

Different providers offer different plans on a monthly or annual subscription basis. The prices range from $10-$20 per month. Some providers go an extra step and charge the recipient another $0.06-$0.30 per minute. With a VoIP service like MightyCall, it costs as low as $15/per user/month.

Do you need to pay extra fees for toll-free service in the United States?

This depends on the provider that you purchase your toll-free plan from. Some providers charge you extra costs for add-ons or special features. With MightyCall, you pay just a flat fee that offers unlimited minutes (applicable for the Business plan and above).

Who owns the US 1-800 number after purchase?

Once you purchase a 1-800 number for the USA with MightyCall, you/your company will be its official owner. That means that you will be able to use it, port it, transfer it or do anything else with it within the legal framework.

Can I send and receive text messages with my virtual 800 number?

Yes. You can use SMS just like with any other number. In a business context, this is particularly useful for marketing campaigns, appointment reminders, and promotions. However, note that 2022 national regulations require all US toll-free numbers to undergo verification to have the outbound texting feature enabled.

How to Choose Between USA Toll-Free Number Providers?

We’ve looked through the major benefits that free-to-dial numbers have for consumers and companies. But there’s more: another major reason for their popularity is they are cheap and simple to set up. There are numerous toll-free service providers in the USA. Most of them offer packages.

Here are some questions to help you sift through the providers:

 • What is the service-price ratio? – An extremely cheap toll-free service provider is more likely to give poor service. Paying an astronomical amount of money doesn’t seem reasonable either. Focus on providers with a flat monthly fee and unlimited minutes.
 • Is it Voice over IP (VoIP)? – For small businesses, a VoIP phone number is preferable to a landline. Along with the number, VoIP services offer additional options and tools to manage business communications.
 • Is the service cross-device compatible?– If calls are your major tool of communication, opt for services that support multiple devices (cell phones, tablets, laptops, IP desk phones, etc.) that your team can use to answer calls.
 • Is the provider flexible? – Even if you like your provider, you’d better have a portability option. Porting your existing number means keeping the familiar number while obtaining the features and support of your new provider.
 • Do they have a vanity option?– Who doesn’t remember the classic example, “1-800 FLOWERS?” For a small business, a vanity number (e.g. a combination of letters and digits) is an excellent step toward business scaling.

Make the Most Out of Your US Toll-Free Number

1-800 is the magic “free number” for your customers. This means they can make the first move without worrying about charges, with all the focus on your product or service.

Once upon a time reserved for elite business corporations, nowadays toll-free numbers are widely available for any business that wants to add professionalism and convenience to their services. With 1-800 numbers and other free-to-dial numbers, people don’t pay anything for placing the call. Connection charges are handled by the company. Callers can dial toll-free numbers from any device: cell phones, landlines, and internet-powered devices. Though the call is generally free, some fees may still be applicable depending on how the call is placed.

Navigate:

What Does a Toll-Free Call Mean?

A toll-free call is a call that’s free of charge for the person placing the call. Instead of having the caller pay for the connection, it’s the owner of the phone number, such as the person or company, that gets charged for the call. These numbers have distinct, preassigned 3-digit codes in place of an area code. Those codes currently are: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, and 833 (it’s important to note that these codes are not interchangeable).

These numbers are typically used for customer service calling for several notable reasons:

 • To help a business avoid appearing local if it’s located in various areas
 • To encourage people to call, since these numbers are free
 • To provide a company with a professional appearance
 • To prevent callers from blocking their caller ID (the option isn’t available on these numbers)
 • To stay accessible to customers in case of relocation
 • To keep the number portable since the FCC requires 800 and other such numbers to be portable between services. This means you can easily move from one company to the next and have the same business number. Unless otherwise explicitly stated, a business owns its number, for all intents and purposes.

How to Call 1-800 Numbers From a Landline?

The easiest and completely free option is to place calls to 1-800 and similar free numbers from a regular telephone.

On your phone’s dial pad, enter:

 1. The country code (e.g. “1” for the United States)
 2. The free national prefix (e.g. “800”)
 3. The number (e.g. “123-4567”)

In other words, when calling from the U.S., the number you enter will look like this: 1(800)123-4567

International means that you’re calling either a U.S.-based toll-free line from outside the country, or you’re making an international toll-free call.

If you’re making the call to a United States toll-free number from outside of the country, you’ll need to enter:

 1. The country code (“1”)

They have a different format and may not be recognized by U.S. phone carriers. Find more information in the “Dialing from abroad” section below.

Dialing 800 Numbers from Abroad

Since the dialer is generally not charged with a call placed to a free number and the company handles all charges, many companies block calls made from abroad to avoid high international call rates. Many international companies provide local numbers for customers to use instead, or have warnings concerning “additional charges” under specific conditions.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t contact toll-free numbers internationally. The Universal International Freephone Number (UIFN) is a service that allows companies to use the international prefix “+800”.

Note that Universal International Freephone Numbers don’t have a country code and look like this: +800-1234-5678. However, this number format may not be recognized by some U.S cell phone operators as valid, which means you may not be able to place or receive these calls. If you plan to make calls to international freephone numbers, consult your mobile operator for more information.

With freephone calls, all expenses are handled by the company hosting the number. 144 carriers in 67 countries participate in the UIFN program which allows free dialing from countries where the system has been adopted.

Who Pays for Calling 1-800 Toll-Free Numbers?

Toll-free calls on landlines

The charges for 800 and similar calls go to the person/company hosting the number. Essentially, businesses are paying for customers to call them—that’s why these numbers are predominantly used in customer-service calling. The calling process is free for the person that’s dialing if they’re calling through a landline number.

Toll-free calls on cell phones

Back in the 1960s, toll-free calling was developed for landlines, not mobile phones which didn’t exist. Nowadays, this turned into a loophole for mobile carriers. When you’re calling 800 or similar numbers from mobile, the provider isn’t technically responsible for toll-free charges on cell phones. You’ll still incur roaming charges and will use your minutes to call, just like with any other number. If you enter an 800 number from a cell and do not have an unlimited calling plan with your service provider, the call will use your available minutes – so it won’t be “free” at all.

Extra charges for some toll-free calls on mobile phones

While it usually costs nothing to dial a 1-800 number from a regular phone, not all calls from mobile phones are free.

Situations where the caller may be charged include:

 • Conference calls – supposedly free conference calls may distribute charges among participants to ease the financial burden on the company
 • Religious help lines – Calls that provide religious services over the phone may also result in extra charges
 • Any call where you hear a warning about extra charges – some numbers that have a toll-free prefix in fact have calling rules set up that accept free calls only within one or several states. So if you dial a free number but hear a message along the lines of “additional charges may apply”, stick to the meaning that additional charges will be applicable to your call.

How to Call Toll-Free Numbers Online?

To call a toll-free number when traveling and prevent extra charges, you can either use Wi-Fi calling or online calling services like Skype or Viber that allow you to make outgoing calls to external numbers.

Wi-Fi calling is a feature that’s available on some phones for placing calls over the internet without extra cellular or internet charges. Whether you’re planning to make a regular or free call in this case does not matter.

Another way to place toll-free calls online is through a calling app like Skype or Viber. However, calling through services like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger isn’t available because these apps don’t support calls made to external numbers.

Skype

Skype allows free international calls to U.S. toll-free numbers, and free numbers in several other countries including France, UK, and Poland. However, users note that they’ve been able to make calls via Skype to free numbers in Austria, Australia, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Netherlands, and Taiwan.

 4. Enter the toll-free prefix and number
 5. Click the “Call” button

 2. Tap on the Dialpad icon

How to Dial 1-800 Numbers with Words?

Sometimes, you’ll see numbers that combine a free prefix with a combination of letters or words. These are called vanity toll-free numbers. Vanity numbers are numbers that contain words or abbreviations that are easy to memorize. They are great for branding and hotlines. One of the most famous examples is 1-800-FLOWERS the use of which helped launch the company into newfound stratospheres of profit.

On your phone’s dial pad, you’ll see that every digit has several letters that correspond to it. For example, “2” stands for “A/B/C”, “3” stands for “D/C/E” etc. To enter a number that consists of letters or a combination of numbers and letters, simply press the digits that correspond to the letters.

For any number that contains letters or words:

 1. Enter “+” and the country code (e.g. “+1” for the USA)
 2. Enter the prefix (e.g. “800”)
 3. Enter the digits corresponding to the letters. For example, the word “FLOWERS” corresponds to the digits “3569377”. So you would input +1(800)3569377

Calling a Toll-free Number is Easy From Any Device

Calling a number with a 1-800 or other free prefix is simple from any device you have at hand. Keep in mind that to keep calls made to these numbers completely free, it’s advisable to place the call from a landline number. Calls made through internet devices can also be made for free if you’re using Wi-Fi instead of cellular data, or a third-party app like Skype.

If you have a business and are looking into getting an easy-to-remember number with a national presence, VoIP services like MightyCall have a wide collection of 1-800 and other numbers for you to choose between, with different area codes and vanity number options available. Check these out today.

This service is highly sought after by customers as they do not have to pay to speak with a business, especially if they have already purchased a product and need to resolve any issues with customer support.

This service is not limited to a specific geographic area or time zone, making it highly convenient for customers. This level of accessibility is important for customer satisfaction, as receiving a large mobile bill after addressing an issue with a fridge that suddenly stopped working, for example, can add frustration and may drive them to seek out a competitor.

What Toll-free Area Codes are Available in Canada?

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is a system used to manage the allocation of phone numbers and area codes across the United States, Canada, and other countries in North America. This is because Canada’s phone number list is almost the same as the US’s.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is responsible for overseeing this system in the United States. The first three digits of a phone number, also known as the “area code,” indicate the geographical region of the phone number, while the next three digits, known as the “exchange code,” indicate the specific phone exchange. The final four digits of the phone number are known as the “line number.”

Area codes were first introduced in 1947, when the NANP was established. The list of toll-free prefix numbers is constantly growing and expanding to meet the demand.

Some providers allow for 800 numbers in Canada and 310-numbers to be used in a “shared-cost service,” where the call is free for people dialing from landlines but sometimes not free from cell phones.

How Such Numbers Work?

Generally, a 1-800 Number in Canada is connected to a specific phone number, be it personal or corporate. When such a number is dialed, the person dialing is redirected – again, free of charge – to the number it has been programmed to.

Sometimes a business phone system – like MightyCall – offers a vanity number. This is a feature that allows you to customize your number. You’ve definitely seen vanity numbers before: numbers like 1-888-345-CATS or 1-888-22-PIZZA.

Here’s a reminder on how it works:

 • For caller: If you’re the person dialing, you’d just dial the number as usual to call the company you want to reach and you won’t be charged for the call.
 • For business owners: If you’re a company owner, you’d typically pay for a Canadian 1-800 number from a provider (usually it’s a monthly fee).

Previously these numbers were used only to receive calls from customers, but modern providers allow you to use features such as forwarding, recording, etc.

It is recommended to use a VoIP system that will also give you access to advanced features like cloud space, multiple team members answering the calls, transcription, and more, which gives additional flexibility to your business communication process.

Canada’s Toll-Free Number Format

Is 1800 toll-free in Canada?” Yes, it even has the same format as the US number. It is a construction of elements that serve as a code that wirelessly connects people. Here are the main components:

 • + sign,
 • international country code (1),
 • toll-free code (800),
 • 7 digits local number

For example, here is a break-down of the number the RBC uses:

 • +
 • 1
 • 800
 • 769-2511

Who pays for a call to a Toll-Free Phone Number?

The person calling a toll-free phone number does not pay for the call. Instead, the cost of the call is borne by the owner or subscriber of the number, also known as the “Responsible Organization” (Resp Org). This is because these numbers are routed through a special system that allows the calls to be made without the caller incurring any charges. The charges incurred by the responsible organization, which can be the business or individual that owns the number, are usually based on the duration and volume of calls received.

What’s the Difference Between Toll-free and Local Numbers?

Toll-free numbers are phone numbers that start with specific codes (800, 888, etc.) and are free for the caller to dial. The cost is borne by the owner/subscriber of the number. Local numbers, on the other hand, are assigned to a specific geographic area and calls to them are charged to the caller. The main difference is who pays for the call.

Types of Toll-Free Phone Numbers in Canada

There are 3 main types of telephone numbers to look at if you want to get a toll-free number in Canada:

Domestic toll-free numbers

These numbers will allow your domestic customers to reach you without them having to pay for it. A great marketing tool that will make your clients feel more welcome to give you a call by making it free for them. These numbers do not have a city or state indicator on them, clearing your number from any potential prejudices.

Vanity toll-free numbers

Customizable and on brand. These phone numbers are ideal for companies that want to stand out and focus on the brand image. You can use words to create memorable numbers that will look equally pretty on your website, ads, and your client’s dial pad.

International toll-free numbers

International telephony fees can be pretty high, making your customers question whether giving you a ring is worth the phone service bill they will get at the end of the month. This is why it is important to consider getting an international number prior to expanding your company to overseas customers. That way you will pay a fixed price that will narrow down the customers’ concerns to questions relating to your product rather than their phone bills.

Important Points About 1-800 Numbers in Canada

How much does a toll-free number in Canada cost?

The cost of a toll-free number in Canada varies by service provider and plan. Generally, there is a one-time setup fee and a monthly or annual fee. Additional charges may apply for features like voicemail and call forwarding. The cost of the call is borne by the owner/subscriber of the number. You can be looking at anything from $5 USD to $500 depending on the provider. MightyCall plans start at just $15 per user.

Who owns a phone number after purchasing?

When you purchase a phone number, you are renting it from the service provider that controls the number. They retain ownership and can reassign it. As a customer, you have the right to use the number for the duration of your contract and can transfer it to another service provider. Phone number allocation and management is regulated by regulatory bodies like the FCC.

Can the US dial Canada’s 800 numbers?

Absolutely! US and Canada operate within the North American Numbering Plan, meaning that they often share the number dialing codes. People in the USA will be able to dial numbers from Canada, and vice versa.

How to Pick the Right Provider for Your Company?

There are millions of Canadian toll-free numbers for business and, because of the nature of the NANP, there are tons of providers located all over. Below are a couple things you might want to keep in mind when choosing a Canadian toll-free number provider:

 • If you have a small company you may want to look into a VoIP provider. They often have extra tools and open pathways to other possibilities that other kinds of providers do not.
 • Look for toll-free service providers that allow simultaneous conversations to be going on at the same time. This will reduce client wait times, which means it’ll be less likely that they’ll end up hanging up on you.
 • Having a vanity number option is always a great idea. It will help your number stand out beyond the mass of “800-1234” numbers.
 • Make sure that your provider has portability for these numbers. If down the road you decide to move to a different provider, you don’t want to lose your phone number. Having portability as an option means you can take your virtual number with you.
 • Prices are tricky. Too high and you’re probably getting ripped off, as the multitude of providers should mean you get a good rate. Too low and you’ll probably get poor service (which means your clients will get poor service too!).

Expand Your Reach With Toll-Free Numbers in Canada

Canadian toll-free numbers are an invaluable instrument when it comes to giving your company a professional look. They project a strong brand image, improve customer experience, aid with scaling up and help you save your funds with a multitude of additional features. It is the logical step in the direction of leveling your company up.

Toll-free numbers are a long-standing rock in the business world, having existed since 1966. Customers are more likely to contact businesses with these kinds of numbers because they are free to call and because they give the owner a nationwide presence. You almost certainly have called these numbers many times yourself.

Here we will talk in detail about these particular digits, including what they look like, how they work, their advantages and their disadvantages. We’ll also be addressing how to understand whether your company needs one and, if it does, how to get a 1-800 number.

In this article we cover:

What is a Toll-Free (1-800) Number?

These numbers, also known as freephone numbers, are used for calls where the caller does not have to pay; instead, the owner pays. This is great for interested clients, as they let them contact a company or individual from afar without paying long distance fees. In addition to 800 codes, these also begin with: 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833.

Company owners typically use these digits for customer service, for increasing sales, and for providing additional information about the company. All three uses benefit greatly from the fact that these digits cost nothing to connect with.

When Do You Need Toll-Free Numbers?

There are many reasons why businesses decide to get a 1-800 number. Here are some following indications that it may be time for you to follow suit:

 • It’s difficult for customers to contact you – perhaps you live far away and they don’t want to pay the cost of connecting with you.
 • Personal phone calls getting mixed up with business calls – if you have one number for personal and business calls, it can be difficult to handle all incoming messages. But getting one specifically for your work enables you to keep things clearer.
 • Your company is rapidly scaling up and you need to reach new audiences – You’ve expanded lately and you’re ready to get more customers. How can you do it? One solid way is with a 800 number.
 • Your company operates in a few areas of the country – congratulations! Your company is spread out and booming. But now you can’t stick with the local number you started out with; after all, why would someone in Pennsylvania want to pick up the phone for someone they don’t recognize, calling from California? But when you get an 800 number, you instantly go national- and everyone recognizes those opening digits.

How to Get a 1-800 Number for Your Business

Choose a toll-free number service provider and analyze the offered features

There are a lot of VoIP phone systems out there. Each provider offers their own combination of features, customer service, and of course, digits available for purchase. Analyze each carefully, as each is oftentimes built for a particular type of customer.

Choose your toll-free number prefix

Firstly, you have to pick the first three digits. Oftentimes known as the “area code”, the prefix for a toll-free number for business is something like we previously discussed, starting with something like 888.

Set up the Account

Next, set up your account. Depending on who you went with you may have to do things like input your call forwarding and your caller ID settings.

Set up a 1-800 number

Setting up these sorts of digits doesn’t require anything particularly different from ordinary ones, at least on your end. If your chosen VoIP company allows for extensions, however, you might want to get those situated.

Start using your toll-free business number

Use your newfound national reach to get into contact with folks from sea to shining sea.

How Does a Toll-Free Number Work?

If you’re the caller, it’s simple: just punch the digits into your phone and wait for someone to answer. You won’t pay a dime.

If you’re a business owner, you’ll most likely be buying from a business communications or VoIP company. The fee is oftentimes monthly.

Previously, toll-free business lines were used only to receive calls from customers, and of course the owner paid. But now, modern providers allow you to use new and advanced VoIP features along with the standard functionality.

Benefits of Getting a Toll-Free Number for Your Business

 • People Are More Likely to Call When It’s Free to Do So: It costs you nothing to call toll-free – that’s why it’s in the name! And everyone knows it. If you have one of these numbers, folks are way more likely to give you a ring.
 • Simple Prefixes: Toll-free 800 numbers have simple prefixes. They’re very, very easy to remember, as pretty much everyone has grown up surrounded by ads with them in them.
 • Professionalism: “Serious” companies have these numbers – at least, that’s what people think. If you have one, you’ll be seen as more established and “real,” even if you’re a very small business.
 • Be Accessible Across the Country: These numbers are available from Chicago to LA and back to New York. They massively expand your potential for new clients.
 • Make it Easier for Employees to Work Remote: With VoIP, your employees can log on and make calls from wherever they are – including, of course, their home or other remote location.
 • Divide Your Personal Life from Your Work Life: Using one strand of digits for all aspects of your life can be frustrating. When you buy one of these, however, a barrier can be erected between your work life and your personal life.
 • Keep Yourself in People’s Thoughts: By having a number with a prefix people are already aware of, it becomes much easier for people to remember you, instead of thinking of you as a totally random strand of digits.

Useful Tips for Getting an 800 Number for Business

When getting these types of numbers it can at first seem daunting, especially if you’ve never done so before. But don’t worry – if you follow the helpful tips below, you’ll get through the process just fine:

 • Start with why you’re buying a new number – why have you decided to go with a new number? You are moving in the right direction if you’re opening up a new hustle (especially online or e-commerce shop), going national with your existing company, or have a national customer base regardless of region.
 • Consider a vanity 800 number – these are a great way to get attention and keep your company in your customers’ thoughts, especially if you’re not a local business that they’re used to seeing.
 • Use digits which are easy to remember – think about repeating digits, like 5555, or alternating ones, like 1212.
 • Be open to prefixes other than the standard 800 – you can use other prefixes, like 888. These still have a national presence but will change it up from the standard.
 • Research which companies offer which toll-free phone numberssome companies don’t offer these, so you want to make sure ahead of time that they do before signing on.
 • Don’t wed yourself to a particular combination of digits – sometimes your preference may not be available. When selecting digits, think of a few possibilities ahead of time.

Important Points about Getting Toll-free Numbers for Business

Toll-free prefixes

When people think about these numbers, they more often than not think of the classic 1-800 prefix. But here’s the thing about that: a standard number has 7 digits. If it starts with 800, there could be around 7 million different combinations in total. That may seem like a lot, until you realize the United States has over 330 million adults. This necessitated more prefixes to be created. Therefore, they can begin with the following codes:

 • 800
 • 888
 • 877
 • 866
 • 855
 • 844
 • 833

All of these function the same, but they all start differently. 1-800-555-5555 will go to a different person than will 1-888-555-5555.

What countries support 1-800 numbers?

The 1-800 digits we’ve been talking about operate only in North America. If you make calls outside this area with them, you’ll still end up paying fees (ditto if you call them from outside the US). Other countries do also have these sorts of numbers, but they’ll differ because each country has a “country code” beforehand (America’s is +1, for example, and Australia’s is +61).

Who owns toll-free numbers after purchase?

As soon as you obtain a toll-free number, you become its owner. These are portable; this means that they are your property and that no operator can refuse to port it to another operator. But keep in mind- if you are going to port your to another operator, do not cancel service with your current operator until the porting is complete.

Getting a Toll-free Number is a Step Toward Growth

When you get an 800 number for your business, you purchase an effective marketing tool that provides clients and callers with a quick and memorable way to contact your company via toll-free calling. Many VoIP phone systems offer getting an 800 toll-free number as a feature of their services. However, there are situations where the fact that you can get an 800 number for small business may not be a slam dunk for you. If you do most of your operations in one region, you may not need to serve subscribers all over the country, so a local number or a vanity phone number, if you want to grab attention, would be better.

With that in mind, MightyCall might be what you’re looking for in a VoIP phone system. While they offer the potential for you to unlock toll-free service, some people need more than just toll-free calling. Features like call recording, visual voicemail, auto attendant, business hours, and more all come with MightyCall’s respected support staff.

The article covers:

Whatsapp is the most popular messaging app in the world, with over 2 billion users in 180 countries worldwide. More importantly for your business, Whatsapp recently launched Whatsapp Business, which has already racked up more three million users.

whatsapp business

WhatsApp Business features

Through Twilio, Whatsapp Business is more of an API than a direct VoIP competitor, which actually makes it a capable and sharp companion to any VoIP system.

The direct features include:

 • a business name,
 • a business description,
 • business hours,
 • business category and
 • other identifying information like your business email, website, and address (if you have a physical store).

More in-depth offerings include a business catalogue complete with pictures and info, easy grouping tools for your contacts and greetings that you can use for various situations.

There are not any hardcoded, classic VoIP features like call queues, call recording or even auto-attendants. Whatsapp is not necessarily trying to take over that corner of the market, but rather to complement existing structures to help businesses provide the best communications experience possible—similar to the revolutionary way they helped bridge the gap between everyday communications as well.

While VoIP still focuses heavily on the calling experience, with other methods of communication—texting, social media, etc.—gravitating around it, Whatsapp has always focused on messaging—likely the main reason the app’s popularity exploded in the first place.

If that tandem sounds like something your business could use, or you already have Whatsapp and simply want to see what it can do, then installing it for use with a virtual phone number is quite simple. In all honesty, the process is no different than installing Whatsapp with a regular, sim card-attached number.

How to use WhatsApp Business with MightyCall

Please note: Due to 2022 WhatsApp policy changes limiting WhatsApp Business registration with VoIP numbers, please contact MightyCall Support at +1 (888) 256-8312 ext.2 or support@mightycall.com to check compatibility with your VoIP number.

It is important to note that you need to already have a MightyCall virtual phone number (or a number from any VoIP provider) before linking them.

 • Step one: Download the Whatsapp Business app for either iOS or Android (it’s free)
 • Step two: As you go through the sign-up process, enter your MightyCall virtual phone number as your contact.
 • Step three: You will receive a verification text (found in the History – Texts section of your MightyCall profile); enter the code and then your Whatsapp Business account is ready to go!

MightyCall demo

You can send text messages and multimedia

You can make and receive calls

Another important note: While MightyCall allows for unlimited devices, Whatsapp Business limits you to using one device at a time.

That means that if you want to use the MightyCall+Whatsapp combo, you can only be signed in with both on one device at a time.

If you are signed in on one device and try to use the Whatsapp-linked MightyCall number on another device, the first device will automatically sign you out. If you want to use Whatsapp Business on multiple devices, you will need multiple phones/devices (which kinds of defeats the purpose of VoIP, which eliminates the need to carry several phones in the first place).

Why should you use Whatsapp Business with a virtual phone number?

There a few obvious reasons and others that require a bit more analysis. The basics is that Whatsapp is free to use, has end-to-end encrypted messaging (which protects your privacy, and more thoroughly than the majority of messaging apps can say), and is both extremely easy to use and extremely popular.

Now, typically jumping on the hype train and doing/using something just because others are doing/using it is a bad idea, but in the case of Whatsapp, the fact that there is a userbase a billion+ strong in every corner of the globe ensures the best product and easy use since the majority of people you know will probably have it installed too.

Whatsapp even lets you send a limited number of messages monthly to people who don’t have the service, a big convenience with how fallen out of favor imessage has become and how untrustworthy social media messengers have become (and yes, Facebook does own Whatsapp, but they don’t want to kill the golden pony, so it has retained much of what makes it distinct since Zuckerberg & co. took over).

Those are the reasons anyone should be using Whatsapp, but what the business community?

Play
Virtual Phone Numbers

Why should they choose using Whatsapp Business with VoIP over hundreds of other options?

Moreso than any of its competitors, Whatsapp enables “conversational commerce”, the fancy term for what every business—especially small businesses—crave: being able to have meaningful interactions, whether it’s answering a customer question or following up, in a way that feels genuine and not drenched in the cynicism of sales. Unsurprisingly, these interactions more reliably lead to purchases and future relationships with the brand.

Businesses have started using Whatsapp because it works. While VoIP and calling still holds immense power in business today, messaging is nearly as important, particularly with younger people. A Dimensions Data survey found that 9 out of 10 consumers would choose to message a business before any other method of communication. In response to this, businesses have quickly adjusted, with the majority now including Whatsapp as a support channel for customers experiencing troubles, while other businesses have even more fully incorporated Whatsapp into their network, going so far as to take orders via the app (in fact, I had this experience just last week when booking a massage).

With a robust 100-person maximum on the number of people in a group chat, Whatsapp has even become a reliable internal communication system—one that doesn’t require employees to learn complex systems or manage messages in a CRM. Better yet, with documents, images and videos easily shared among contacts, there are few things a team cannot do on Whatsapp Business.

Of course, those tasks have their place in business management, but that is where the VoIP half comes into play. Whatsapp Business keeps things easy and clear while VoIP powers the more demanding aspects of customer communications. Just as VoIP has modernized and, in many respects, replaced conventional desk phone systems, Whatsapp has modernized and largely replaced email as the preferred method of quickly contacting both businesses and colleagues.

With it being free of charge and so simple to use, there is no excuse to not combine Whatsapp Business and a virtual phone number to at least see how much your company can improve its customer communications.

Customer service

eVoice offers only a single phone number to contact its support team, which is another con for companies, since setting up a virtual business number often demands the expert help of technical support.

 • Easy porting – Virtual phone lines are easy to port, making transition from one provider to another hassle-free.

How to Choose a Virtual Business Phone Service

When getting ready to set up a virtual business phone number, it’s necessary not just to compare prices, but to look at several key components of a phone system that will profit your business for years to come. Here are the most important points:

Security and Reliability
How secure is the virtual phone system you’re choosing? Does it answer the latest security protocols and protect your privacy? What are independent reviewers saying? Don’t choose any provider that makes you hesitant about security.

Price-value
A provider may be a perfect value for one company, but terrible for another. It all depends on the size of your team and the features you’re looking for. Based on what you’re looking for and your budget, evaluate how well the solution fits your needs.

Product features
If you’ve used a virtual phone number service before, make a list of features that are most important to your team, and another list of those you haven’t used in a while (or ever). Compare this to the plan you’re currently looking into.

Hardware/software
Does the system come with special hardware or software to download? For example, if you’re planning on using IP phones or desk phones with adapters, what models are compatible with the provider? It’s best to have this answered by customer support.

Learning curve
Choose a virtual telephone service that matches the working habits of your employees. For example, a team that works remotely will need a different solution from a team that has worked form desk phones their whole life.

Customer support
And speaking of customer support, whatever provider you choose, you’ll likely have questions that you will need answered, fast. Especially if you have a team. Choose a provider with reliable support, preferably live agents.

Extra services
In addition to your business phone number, do you need international numbers, Integrations, support for IP desk phones, or extra numbers? If so, look for a provider that offers the extra services you need.

Free trial
Does the service offer a free trial? Most do these days, but some offer “a money-back guarantee”. Note that this is not the same as a free trial, and money may not be returned to you.

Virtual Business Phone Number: Choose the Best Option Today

The market is populated with virtual business phone app providers all promising exceptional call experiences at the best price. However, as we’ve seen above, each service has a particular focus, and sometimes even a niche, that they work best for.

Taking the above into consideration, our best picks to get virtual business phone numbers from are:

 • MightyCall rounding up as the most reliable and feature-rich service for small and mid-sized companies;
 • Nextiva – if you’re looking for unlimited video conferencing bundled into an affordable price;
 • Ooma Office is a good choice if you need to supply your office with desk phones already integrated into the communications system.

So you figure it’s time for a change and want to port your number from Verizon to MightyCall.

We know you’re probably assuming that it is going to be a hassle and a challenge, but rest easy — it’s not a difficult thing at all. MightyCall is plenty used to people bringing their numbers over from other carriers, and Verizon is plenty used to folks leaving!

Best of all, porting your Verizon number to MightyCall is absolutely free.

That said, even though the process is easy, you probably don’t exactly know the how-to when it comes to porting your number. That’s why we decided to help you out by putting together this handy guide.

1. Get Together Everything You’ll Need

So let’s get to it. The process of porting a number generally speaking doesn’t take a long time, but it isn’t something that happens immediately- depending on the kind of number, it can take anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks. But if you don’t have everything together, it’ll just make it harder for yourself, and the whole process will take much longer.

One of the first things you’ll need is what’s called your Customer Service Report- or CSR for short. This is a collection of information, which MightyCall is going to have to make sure matches. We should rephrase, however- you don’t *need* it, but then you’re going off of your own knowledge of your data, which isn’t always a good thing.

You’ll also need a copy of your most recent phone bill. This obviously shouldn’t be all that difficult to do.

2. Create a MightyCall Account

port number

Obviously, you’ll need something to actually port the number over to. And that “something” is your MightyCall account! That process is pretty straightforward. Head on over to MightyCall.com to start it off!

3. Give MightyCall the Information It Needs to Get Your Number Ported

Next, head on over to this link and fill out the number porting form. If you already have your CSR by this point, it’ll be a lot easier to fill out. To start you’ll need your email (the email used for your MightyCall account), account type (business or personal), and of course your name.

Then, you’ll have to choose from a couple of download links, based on the kind of number you wish to port. Among these are a Letter of Authorization, which in black-and-white makes abundantly clear that you are giving permission for your number to be ported.

Print and sign/fill out the forms and make sure all the information is input correctly. Then re-upload the forms.

Play

4. Talk with Verizon

To port, you’ll have to contact their customer service and get a special pin number. If you do not give this pin number to MightyCall, the port will not go through.

After this, it’s time to do everyone’s favorite activity: waiting! All should go smoothly; if it doesn’t, MightyCall will tell you why Verizon denied your request, and then you’ll have to take it up with them (this is unlikely to happen though). If all goes well, you’ll receive an email confirmation once the port of your number from Verizon to MightyCall is complete.

Why Two are Better Than One: Getting a Second (Business) Number for Your Smartphone https://www.mightycall.com/blog/get-second-business-number-for-your-smartphone/ Fri, 21 Aug 2020 09:19:05 +0000 https://www.mightycall.com/?p=84215 Getting a second number for your smartphone makes small business look professional, reliable, and is incredibly convenient. Discover how to get one!

Alright, so picture this: you’re going to the beach! Suns out, guns out; you’ve got your bathing suit on, your sunscreen, your towel and…your single flip-flop, which you have to jam both feet into, thereby forcing you to awkwardly hop around the beach. It’s awful. You keep falling over and never make it to the water. Day ruined.

This is a goofy image, right? It should be. Anyone would look silly, hopping around with both feet in one flip-flop. But guess what? It’s about as goofy as someone jamming their personal lives and their business lives into a single phone number on their smartphone. In a time period where it’s so easy to get a second business number for your smartphone, it makes no sense to just stick with one.

Using a second number just for business gets you plenty of bang for your buck. And it helps you to organize life—especially that critically important work and life balance—in a major fashion. A second number for your smartphone makes things just far easier for yourself, simplifies your day-to-day happenings, and really ups your professionality- big league.

We will be going over all of those benefits in great detail throughout this post (as well as a short, easy how-to when it comes to actually adding that second number for your smartphone!), so read on to find out more!

But first…

Let’s address something the skeptical readers amongst you probably wondering: how does this even work?

It is a pretty fair question. Most people, pretty much since cellphones began to be truly widespread, have associated their cellphone with a single phone number. One number, one cell phone. But over the last few years, that association has begun to become altered in a pretty big way.

With innovative telephony companies like MightyCall and mobile apps like WhatsApp becoming incredibly popular, more and more people have been divorcing themselves from the idea of the single number that they have on their phone as being representative of who they are digitally (many people, for example, set up their WhatsApp account with the number on their phone and later change the number on their phone while keeping their WhatsApp number the same).

In that way, phone numbers are almost becoming like emails; as people have work and personal emails, so too are people beginning to adopt work and personal phone numbers. So the idea of having more than one number on your phone isn’t some odd or hair-brained idea. It’s growing more and more common.

But why? Well, due to the benefits we mentioned in brief above, but will now be dealing with in more detail below!

Packs of Benefits #1 of Getting a Second Phone Number for Your Smartphone: Organization

If you are reading this and you already own a business (or you have looked into owning one), no matter how large, you’re already aware of a critically important fact: organization is absolutely key. It’s cliché, but you know what? It’s true. An unorganized business is going to at best run into all sorts of problems while staying afloat, and will at worst just fail.

Organization starts with you. Having your life organized will make it easier for you to run your business with a clear head. And doing that means having your personal and your private life clearly delineated. One of the easiest ways to go about this? Getting a second phone number for your cellphone.

If you use your personal number for your business activities, then every single time you get a cell phone call, you’re going to have to wonder, going into it, whether or not the caller is a friend with a new number looking to chat or if it’s an angry client. With a second phone number on your cellphone, you can set it up so that you know which of your numbers is being called- your personal number or your business number.

“But stop,” some of you say, “there’s a simple way around that: just carry two phones!” And I mean, look- yeah, carrying two phones is definitely a way around that. For people who work for a company, that might work- if you don’t want to receive work calls, just turn it off. Sure. But if you have a work phone, odds are you may need access to it outside of office hours (and if you own your own business, you probably can’t just completely ignore your business calls whenever you don’t feeeeeel like it).

And not only that, carrying around two phones is annoying. They’re clunky, both need to be charged, and just take up extra space (do you want two phones in your pants? I sure don’t). Having a second phone number on your phone, however, takes up no space whatsoever.

The fact of the matter is that it just makes life easier for yourself to have a second number on your cellphone.

Packs of Benefits #2 of Getting a Second Phone Number for Your Smartphone: Professionality

So this one may not be as apparent as first, but it’s pretty important to understand. A lot of folks have it in their heads—probably from the amount of quick-talking salesmen who for decades have been represented on their television screens and in their movies theaters—that giving a customer or client your personal number is a great idea.

It’s not.

To be clear, once you’re on good terms, or if you desperately need to do so to close a sale, then it can be understandable. Otherwise, it’s just not necessary. Firstly, they probably don’t want some random persons’ personal number. Think about calling to order a pizza. If you knew you were calling the pizza guys’ personal number, and that he might be home playing a board game with his kids- well you probably wouldn’t call to order the pizza! Same deal here. People are going to feel weird calling a personal number, so don’t make them.

Secondly, having a second number for your cellphone (which you can use as your business number) comes across as more professional. You seem like you are more real in that way. You aren’t just a person operating out of your grandmother’s basement- you have your own business number! Having a business number for a lot of people means that you are established and serious. I know, it may sound jokey or a bit eyebrow-raising, but it’s a real phenomenon; these are the kind of things that convince clients to give you their hard-earned cash and their continued business.

How do you get a second phone number for your smartphone?

So if by this point you are convinced—or, at least, you’re marginally more interested than you were before you started reading this!—your next question is going to be the how, as in, “How can I actually make this happen?”

You’ll be glad to know that it’s oftentimes incredibly easy- and with MightyCall, it gets even more so. When you get a second number for your smartphone through MightyCall, you can make calls using your cellphone, either through the cellphone itself or through the MightyCall app. It’s really straightforward.

Plus, if you get a number through MightyCall, that means you also can access, make, and receive calls with your number through your computer or pretty much any web-connected device, dramatically increasing your ability to respond to work-related calls whenever you need to do so.

mightycall mobile app ios

MightyCall makes it super easy to set up an account. When you do so, you just pick a number that you like—organized by area code, though toll-free and even vanity numbers are available—and in a few minutes, you’re ready to go!

There are three price plans, each with a different amount of numbers you can get, though numbers can always be added (and all plans come with limitless extensions!).

Two heads are better than one…

…and so are two numbers!! Do not go hopping through your business career with both feet in one flip flop. You’ll slow yourself down, the growth of your business down, and your interactions with your clients down. Getting a second number makes you seem more serious and will make your clients take you more seriously. Frankly, it makes running your business easier, and it keeps your private life private and your business life business- and it keeps them both separated.

In this massively competitive, interconnected world, there’s no need to tie yourself down to a single phone number. Give yourself the maximum benefits so that you can size as much opportunity as you possibly can- because you can be sure that your competitors aren’t going to be restricting themselves either. So why should you?

Get a second number for your cellphone today and see for yourself how easy and simple your life becomes with one. Oh, and for the one or two of you out there who actually do only own a single flip fop, you should probably get yourself another one, or just another pair entirely. Just a heads up.

Follow these 5 simple steps to keep your familiar business number when making the switch to MightyCall.

When you want to switch telephone providers, realizing you’ll have to port a phone number from one company to another can at first seem like it’s going to be an incredibly un-fun, tedious, and long process. And, well, this is understandable, since you’re probably leaving your provider due to customer service issues or other reasons relating to the process.

Play

But fear not! Because porting a phone number over to MightyCall is actually a cinch. You’ll need some information to start out with, and just a smidge of patience (but don’t worry, not a whole batch of it!) and you’ll have your number ported in no time, and at no extra cost.

Below are the 5 short steps you’ll need to take if you want to port a phone number from AT&T to MightyCall.

Jump right in:

1. Get Your CSR and Your Newest Phone Bill

These two pieces of information are going to go a long way in helping you complete the process (the former isn’t absolutely mandatory but it’s unlikely you’ll succeed without it; the second you’ll definitely need).

A CSR is a “Customer Service Report,” which is information that you’ll need to be able to give to MightyCall when you port your number over. Theoretically, you could know this information already, but you probably don’t. If when you read this you don’t instinctively know what a CSR is, you’ll want to get it. Simply request it from your current company.

The most recent phone bill is, well, your most recent phone bill. Rather straightforward.

2. Get Started on MightyCall

This one is short and sweet: create an account on MightyCall.com. You’ll need it so that MightyCall will have a place to which they can port your number over. It’s an incredibly easy, painless process and only takes a few minutes.

3. Fill Out the Required Form to Port Your Phone Number

MightyCall likes to make things as easy as possible for folks wishing to switch from AT&T. We’ve set up a handy form to port your phone number. The information we’ll need on your side is just some basic stuff (your name, your email, and your account type). And remember, at MightyCall, porting a number costs zero extra dollars on your side.

On that page, you’ll also notice some downloadable documents. Pick from those depending on which describe you, fill them out and sign them (among them is a Letter of Authorization, which allows MightyCall to port your number over- signing this is legally essential!), and then upload them back to the form.

4. Standing on PINS and Needles- you’re almost there!

Next, you will need to ask AT&T for a unique pin, which MightyCall will need to finish the port process.

5. Hurry Up and Wait

Fortunately, your waiting won’t be long! It’s usually quick to port a phone number, taking 1-2 weeks. If it’s a unique sort of number it can take longer, but that’s unlikely. You’ll hear back via email whether it was a success or not. If it was a failure, MightyCall will be able to tell you AT&T’s official reason, but as they are not always detailed in their reasonings, you’ll have to take it up with them.

Final word

Thanks to our free number porting, you don’t have to choose between keeping your familiar business number and switching to a service more adapted to your needs. Neither do you have to pay an extra penny for this handy service!

Porting a phone number from AT&T to MightyCall is an extremely friendly process that has already been embraced by thousands of small businesses looking into better deals. What’s stopping you from making the move?

What are the potential benefits and what provider should you choose? Read on to find the answers.

The post The Power of Two: Why a Second Telephone Number Could Be the Right Move for You first appeared on MightyCall.

]]>
Most people will probably go through much of their entire lives without pondering the need to purchase a second phone number. They’ll think that what they have is enough- that single phone numbers, especially this far into the twenty-first century, can be supplemented with all sorts of additions (Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, Skype, Facebook, etc.). Why, the thinking goes, get a second telephone number when I can just use a bunch of other apps which are, by and large, free?

The problem with this thinking is that it is very, very surface level. And surface-level thinking, especially for small business owners hoping to make it big (or just to stay afloat!) is not the way to go about doing business.

So why is it surface level? Well, we will get into the details throughout this piece, but essentially, a separate, second telephone number provides advantages that saying “message me on Whatsapp instead” just don’t have: it carries a level of professionalism, multiplies what you can do, and breaks down barriers to success which you otherwise might be stopped by.

So what are these advantages and disadvantages? Who needs a second telephone number? What are the potential benefits of a second phone number? And with who should you purchase a second telephone number? We’ll be hitting the answers to all of these questions and more in the piece. Read on to find out why a second telephone number might be right for you!!

So, who needs a second telephone number?

Right off the bat, we’ll be honest with you: every single person does not need a second telephone number. We have all had that annoying trip to the electronics store and been annoyed by the salesperson who tries to force a one size fits all product on folks when it is not really one size fits all, so rest assured we will not be repeating that exercise here.

The fact is, some folks really just do not need a second telephone number. If you are someone who works for a business and you do not really make business calls, don’t get one. Yeah, it might be…fun to switch back and forth, but overall it’ll just end up making your life more difficult.

But there are tons of people who could use a second telephone number and do not yet realize it.

? International and online businesses

Firstly, those who work internationally by default should have a second telephone number. You know how sometimes your phone will ring and it’ll be a number from halfway across the country, and as a result, you don’t want to pick up? Now imagine you’re living in Europe and some American number pops up on your phone. You’re probably going to ignore it. If you do business internationally, it would be tomfoolery to not have a second telephone number.

? Small and local businesses

Even if you do not work internationally, there are still plenty of folks who could use a second telephone number. Like, say, anyone who owns a small business. There is nothing wrong with a small business which puts the emphasis on small—again, Apple started in a garage—but telling people to use the same number you use for your personal life not only smacks of unprofessionalism, but it is also going to be annoying for you. If someone is trying to reach you on your personal number for a business-related reason and your line is busy because you’re talking to your mom, that’s going to hurt your potential business transactions.

? Growing businesses

As you undoubtedly know, new starting businesses do not have years of experience they can point to when people are looking at whether or not they want to become potential clients. They have to work extra hard at being professional. Think of it like McDonald’s versus the little burger joint which opens in your town or restaurant. Does McDonald’s have to work super hard to get customers? No, because you know what you are getting. Can the same be said for the new burger joint? No. Is it fair? Probably not, but it’s reality. And that means going the extra mile and buying a second phone number (which, as we’ll discuss later, is truly not much at all).

What are the potential benefits of a second telephone number?

Now, above we discussed who needs a second phone number, and we went into generalities about how that might help: things like professionalism, self-organization, even with just getting folks to actually pick up the phone. But what about specifics? How specifically can having a second phone number help a person?

Well, for a lot of reasons. Firstly, let us go a little bit more into that organizational point because it is an incredibly important one. Most people divide their life into personal and private, and like it that way. Even those who are workaholics oftentimes separate personal and private, if only for peace of mind. Now, this will be covered more so in the sections to come, but if you get a second telephone number with a company like MightyCall, you do not just purchase a number: you purchase an entirely new way of doing business.

A second telephone number can automate general inquiries

With a second telephone number from a telephony company like MightyCall, you can set up an intuitively designed auto-attendant which you can edit to your heart’s content (from putting in your own voice to your own music- not to mention having full control over design). What this allows for is that your second, business telephone number essentially starts working for you- if you don’t want to talk, you can simply set your auto-attendant up (and if you want to go big, you can set it up in immense detail), and let it do the work for you if you want to take a longer lunch or if it’s the weekend and you are not working. Make personal calls all the live long day; you won’t miss any callers to your second telephone number.

A second phone number projects your credibility and reliability

Secondly, the presentation is important too. We hinted at professionalism a lot, but honestly, it just cannot be overstated. A lot of building a small business is networking, and a lot of networking is doing those seemingly stupid little things—some might even call them games—which everyone hates but is necessary. For example, being able to put your business number and your cell number on your card (especially with the accompanying remark “And here is my cell as well,” or some other garden variety comment) goes a long, long way to staying in the mind of someone you are trying to woo for financial reasons.

A second telephone number keeps customer service going 24/7

Thirdly, it saves you hassle. Let’s face it — customers call at all times of day. With a second phone number, as we discussed above, you can have an auto-attendant deal with folks who decide that thirty minutes to midnight is when they need to talk to someone about buying a new weedwhacker. If you just have a personal telephone number, unless you silence your phone to all callers, you are going to be getting to have those fun conversations all the time (or, at best, your phone will ring a lot, and that’s an annoying intrusion, to say the very least).

When should a business get a second telephone number?

This one is going to be rather short: as soon as you decide this is a long haul sort of deal or as soon as you decide you want your business to be something substantial. If you are only looking to go small—which is totally fine!—and never hope to expand, don’t worry about it. But if you have an inkling that in the future you will want to go big, it’s best to get a second telephone number as early as possible. You’ll be building your business around your telephone number—it’ll be in ads, in people’s contact books/saved as a contact on their phones—and you do not want to change to a new number only after they’ve all memorized your first one. Plus, this way you can build your business around the number.

So again: a business should get a second telephone number as soon as the owner decides that he/she wants to engage in a serious, long-term venture.

Where should you get your second phone number?

Once you have made the first decision—that is, to actually purchase a second telephone number (which- yay!)—the next choice is where to buy it from.

You can start with the obvious choices- that is, the major telephone companies. But they probably are not going to offer expansive choice, because, like the metaphor above, they’re McDonald’s- they don’t need to work hard to please each individual customer because…well, why would they?

Of course, you also do not want to go with an outfit with no reviews whatsoever and a page with basically nothing but a price.

So why not go with the best of both worlds? MightyCall, whose auto-attendant feature we mentioned above, is a long-serving and serious telephony company which offers, along with secondary telephone numbers, tons of unique and cool features which are actually useful (as opposed to just being thrown there to take up space). MightyCall’s plans are also affordable and all of them include even more than one telephone number- upping your potential benefits into the stratosphere!

So take a second…

…and consider getting a second telephone number with MightyCall. With a second telephone number, you can increase your numbers, increase your professionalism, increase your flexibility, increase your personal time- and increase your small business!! Get a second telephone number today, and go get ‘em tomorrow!

How a Virtual Phone Number Can Help Your Business Stay Safe and Active During a Pandemic https://www.mightycall.com/blog/virtual-phone-number-business-safe-active-pandemic/ Fri, 20 Mar 2020 11:12:59 +0000 https://www.mightycall.com/?p=82360 When you can't meet with employees and clients due to social distancing, here's how a virtual phone number can become your business stronghold.

The post How a Virtual Phone Number Can Help Your Business Stay Safe and Active During a Pandemic first appeared on MightyCall.

]]>
As we have all learned by now, in the event of a pandemic society pretty much starts shutting down. Businesses around the entire country are voluntarily shutting their doors to avoid any possibility of getting or spreading the coronavirus, and in some places, they have even begun mandating a complete shutdown of entities which are not critical to societal function. Odds are that this is going to affect your small business as well. So how can owning a virtual phone number from MightyCall help get your small business through the coronavirus (as well as the next society pausing pandemic?).

The fact is, this is an important question. A lot of shuttered businesses are probably wishing that, even just months ago, they had had a plan for how they could get through any serious eventualities. Because right now, the situation is dire, and like the person who doesn’t buy enough toilet paper just to find out that all the stores nearby are out of stock, you don’t want to get caught with your proverbial pants down.

Your business is closed by government order. You can’t afford to just stop working for the next month or two, but you cannot exactly go out and buy new electronics supplies- after all, everything else is closed too! You also cannot meet with your employees, not even in the coworking location you usually use. What do you do? How do you properly prepare for all of this? And what can you do right now, so that you do not stand to lose months of potential business?

You can get yourself a virtual phone number. Since we know a lot of small businesses are probably wracked with worry over coronavirus, we thought we’d put together a list of all the ways how getting a virtual phone number of your own from MightyCall, and using MightyCall’s virtual phone number app, can get your business through the worst of the coronavirus.

Play
Virtual Phone Numbers

A virtual phone number: easy come…easy stay!

So right off the bat, let’s address the most pressing concern: being able to actually transfer your service while in the midst of a lockdown. After all, if you aren’t capable of setting up a new service, this whole thing is going to be rendered moot.

Fortunately, MightyCall is incredibly easy to set up- all you really need is a computer (and a phone, for obvious reasons, but for set-up alone you don’t even technically need that).

Now, as a quick note, we cannot really speak for how fast your current phone provider will be able to port your number over (if you want to stay with your original number, that is, and if you want to switch from your current provider- MightyCall is cheap enough that you can probably afford both, if that’s your desire). In a pandemic, services from the big phone companies may be slower.

To set up MightyCall, you first (assuming you are starting with a brand new number) pick out the virtual phone number you would like to register. This is a pretty straightforward process: on the starting page, you can pick your number(s) by city, area code, or by inputting the specific digits that you want it to include.

Next, select a MightyCall plan. This is pretty easy, as MightyCall has three different price plans: Basic, Standard, and Ultimate. All of them come with tons of features, and all three can be used to run a successful, multi-employee business.

Then you just input your payment information and create an account.

Once everything is started up, you can head on over to your MightyCall web panel, which will look something like this:

set up call flow

Now, we will not need to go through all of this (there are plenty of explainers and how-tos on our blog if you need any further guidance), but to set up the most critical aspects, like how you want to receive calls (to whom calls should go to, at what times you are available, etc.). It’s all incredibly self-explanatory when you are looking at it, and MightyCall’s support staff can of course help you. But by and large, setting up takes just minutes.

Virtual Phone Number, Virtual Contact

So with coronavirus, one of the obvious issues is contact- namely, avoiding it. Getting around talking to people in the flesh is critically important.

Fortunately, with a virtual phone number, this is super easy, barely an inconvenience (both in terms of the previously mentioned set-up and getting it running smoothly with your colleagues).

Now this obviously varies depending on the nature of your business but by and large, you will never have to worry about things running smoothly while you and your employees are consigned to quarantine. If you want to talk face to face, modern technologies like Skype can allow you to talk to your employees, but MightyCall’s web panel allows you to leave notes for one another. With call recordings (both ways!), visual voicemail, and call statistics (such as who is picking up and when, who misses calls, how long they are, etc), you can easily monitor the work your employees are doing and give them gentle (or firm) nudges in the right direction if you think they need the push.

Easily Communicate with Your Clients

Going through Twitter at the moment makes it fairly clear that panic is in the air. Fights in the wine aisle, traffic jams outside of grocery stores, dogs and cats living together- mass hysteria!

What this means is that you can be willing to bet that your clients are not going to be immune to the panic that is gripping society writ large. Fortunately, with MightyCall’s virtual number, you can easily contact your clients and potential callers through a variety of means. You can talk over your computer (provided it has the ability to receive and output sound, which is likely), and you can do so over your browser- no extra downloads necessary.

On your phone, of course, you can use MightyCall’s app, which is laid out in a common-sense easy-to-use way.

mightycall app

Once you set up your basic account settings online, you can almost exclusively use the app, if that is your preferred method of communication. It’s got everything you need: the previously mentioned statistics, the ability to communicate with your clients over calls and texting using your business number, voicemail and voicemail transcriptions, call recordings, and lots more.

All this is to say that you never have to worry about interruptions with your business life (while your personal life is being thrown into coronavirus led disarray).

Do Your Real-Life Work With Your Virtual Number

No need to panic about not being at your office because that’s where your desk phone is, no need to panic about not having access to your work desktop, and no need to worry about incredibly slow-moving VPNs, which almost never work and can be incredibly difficult to get to function.

With MightyCall’s virtual phone number app and technology, all of your necessary work can be done online, safely and easily. You are not ever tied down to a single spot (need to use a computer you’ve never used before? No problem- just go to the website and log in). Do all of your work over your home wi-fi, and if you are on your phone and for whatever reason do not have access to wi-fi, then no problem: feel free to use your phone signal.

To make it easier, MightyCall comes with a boatload of features to help you navigate the crazy economic waves caused by the coronavirus. We have already mentioned call recording, statistics, visual voicemail, and voicemail transcription above- but how about a complete readout of your call history? VIP and/or black-listing (for those folks you either really want to talk to or desperately do not want to talk to)? Or call queues, which enable you to have an orderly assignment of callers to your employees without a digital pile-up?

What these all do is help you to run your business smoothly while a pandemic is running rampant outside. With all of the things we have to keep track of while we are getting through this nuttiness, with MightyCall’s virtual phone number, our business will be one of the few things actually producing some good vibes. Doing all of your real-life work with your virtual MightyCall phone number will be a psychologically, fiscally, and (in the times of a pandemic) literally healthier way of doing business!

In short, coronavirus might last …

…so make sure that your business is prepared! With MightyCall’s virtual phone number, web panel, and virtual phone number app, you will be ready to weather the difficulty that coronavirus (and anything else in this crazy world) is going to throw at you. And once it’s safe for us all to go outside, your communication will be so tightly integrated and running so smoothly with MightyCall’s technology that you won’t even be able to remember the pre-MightyCall times.

Most people have just one phone number. It’s usually seen as the more convenient option, since they get to run all their phone activities through that number and therefore only have to worry about one number.

However, if you happen to be a business owner then running all your activities, both personal and business, through a single phone number might not actually be that convenient. Imagine your phone ringing, and every time you have to wonder if it’s your family or your business associates (as the saying goes- “don’t mix business with pleasure”).

Now, what are the problems you are most likely to face if you decide to “mix business with pleasure”?

You can’t avoid robocalls.

Robocalls are phone calls that use a computerized autodialer to deliver a pre-recorded message, as if from a robot. Robocalls are often associated with political and telemarketing phone campaigns, but can also be used for public-service or emergency announcements. Now, I’m sure you have encountered these types of automated calls quite a couple of times on your personal number, and I’m certain they are all mostly frustrating. And if your personal number is also your business number, I’m afraid that the frustrating nature of these calls is not only what you have to worry about. These automated calls will clog your phone line and block your access to customers, which will severely drag down revenue.

Despite the fact that the U.S Federal Trade Commission has designed a Do Not Call Registry to prevent unwanted automated calls and millions of Americans have this option, the service does not always function as required or even as hoped. Once a number has been compromised, there might be no other option but to change it. Although this is the safest and best option, business owners are often unwilling to do so, especially if the number is already on promotional materials.

You are vulnerable to numerous threats.

You, of course, give your contact out to the world when you have a business, as you want more people to know about your business and to be able to contact you. I really don’t need to stress how dangerous that would be if that number is the same as your personal contact number. You are exposed! You risk being under constant attacks from hackers and scammers and your ‘personal information’ is no longer ‘personal’. We live in a world where this sort of thing is so prevalent that even big technology companies such as Apple, with all sorts of security measures, have had to deal with hacking and bugs of different kinds at one time or the other.

Why would you then risk exposing yourself by advertising your personal number? Imagine advertising to the world the number linked to something as sensitive as your card or bank details- with a little elbow grease, a skilled hacker might be able to get into your account!

You are not in control of the employee-customer interaction.

If you are running your business with your personal number, your employees are likely to be dealing with customers using their own numbers as well. By doing so, you are indirectly giving up control on that part of your business. You don’t know exactly how your employees interact with customers, how they handle conversations and transactions, and what they might fail to do. It is important to keep track of all business activities as you may lose customers through employees’ ineffectiveness or even deceit.

If you are a small business owner who oversees his business all by himself, you probably would like to think that this has little to do with you, but can you really be too careful?

You are bound to that number.

We all know how difficult it is to change a phone number, considering the fact that we register for a lot of services using our phone numbers. For business owners, it is even worse. Once the number has been distributed in different promotional materials and campaigns, changing it would render them all useless, as new ones would have to be made to avoid misinformation. A customer (or a potential customer) will likely lose interest if he calls only to find out that it’s a dead end.

One may argue that well, that means don’t lose your number! But of course we are all victims of circumstances sometimes, and stuff happens- it’s good to have a backup plan.

It disrupts your work-life balance.

This fact needs no special explanation. Although it is quite good to be able to be at the end of your customers’ calls as promptly as possible, you should be able to have a life of your own outside of work. There should be some sort of balance, which will naturally be affected by having no delineating line between your personal and business numbers.

Having gone through everything listed above, hopefully you’ve become open to the idea of getting a dedicated business number. So what now? How can you run your business effectively whilst avoiding all these problems? Just getting a second phone won’t really help. That’s two smartphones to keep track of, to keep charged and so on. And even with this, you still haven’t succeeded in avoiding all the major problems. Robocalls would still bug. You still would not be in full control of the employee-customer interaction. And that phone, together with the number, could still get lost, and now that you have two phones to keep track of it’s twice as likely that one might get misplaced!

Then what is the ultimate solution?

It’s simple: get a second phone number! But not one linked to a phone- why not try going virtual?

mightycall reviews

A virtual phone number is that second phone number you should get, that ultimate solution. If you are hearing about a virtual phone number for the first time, a virtual phone number is simply a telephone number used to route calls to a user’s actual phone number or numbers. Learn more about the virtual phone number and how it works.

What do you and your business stand to benefit by getting this second phone number?

Avoiding robocalls.

Now you can say a final goodbye to those annoying automated calls that are ever capable of clogging your line. All you have to do is deploy an auto attendant. A robocall will be directed to a voice menu, where it gets stuck until it times out instead of reaching you. Different providers have different auto attendants, with varying modes of operations and consequently different effectiveness. If you aim to get one of the best services out there, you should definitely go with MightyCall.

A review from MightyCall user Varga Gulshani (Elegant Paining) directly mentioned how well this has worked for his business number, writing,

stop robocalls

Security and safety.

If you get a second phone number (virtual phone number), all incoming calls will be forwarded to a device you choose, which means you only need to have one phone on you. This setup prevents hackers and scammers from doing what they do best: hacking and scamming you. You will be entirely off the radar of a potential cybercriminal as only the business number is made publicly available. Any threat will be directed towards the servers of your provider, and they are definitely more equipped to combat such attacks than either an average citizen or company.

You can fully control employee-customer interaction.

A virtual phone system allows you to conveniently have control over the calls coming in and going out of every division of your business. This is so because you can create directories for each division of your company, enter each employee’s details and assign to each an extension through which customers can access different divisions of your company. And, the whole process runs through your desk. You can record and keep track of calls, monitor call statistics per employee and much more.

Flexibility of phone number and contact.

Your business is not bound to a particular number such that when a phone or number gets lost, you have to waste resources reprinting promotional materials to keep your customers updated. Opting for a virtual phone number will save you a lot of trouble when you have to change your number due to a loss of your previous one, switching mobile carriers, or any other reasons. Once you have a virtual phone number, it stays with you, so the inconvenience of switching mobile carriers or numbers is limited to your private affairs. And if due to any circumstance you decide to move to another virtual phone service provider, you can easily port your existing number.

Ensures privacy and work-life balance.

Since you are using a second phone number for your business, i.e. the virtual phone number, your private and personal life is separated from your business life. You can easily determine when and who to receive calls from. This is done by configuring the system to forward calls to you and your employees depending on the time, the day of the week, and the caller’s number. You can set the system to forward calls to your cell phone during business hours and to direct calls to voicemail after hours. You can also include a VIP list, allowing for certain people to call you anytime.

There are however even more advantages of a second phone number.

Music on Hold and Your Custom Greeting:

This is another advantage of choosing a virtual phone number. This feature is especially enjoyed by users of MightyCall.

Unlike the conventional voicemail in mobile carriers, here you get to greet clients with different greetings, depending on who’s calling and when. The music on hold and custom greetings feature helps you create a good first impression with callers and potential customers.

Another thing that might interest you to know is that you can actually have more than one business number! This is especially useful if you are operating two or more businesses. You can run these businesses with different business numbers coming from the same virtual phone system. In a nutshell, your ‘second phone number’ can function as a third, fourth, fifth and more, while still technically playing the role of your ‘second phone number’. However, you should know that this feature (of two or more numbers) is made available by different virtual phone service providers at differing rates, and some don’t even support it at all. If you are a MightyCall user however, you’ve lucked out.mu

Conference calling:

If you are the type that operates a large scale business, in which you usually need to hold meetings with many associates, then you will be glad to hear about the conference call feature.

conference call

You can now quite easily hold meetings and conduct collective talks with your partners from anywhere. This feature has a lot of advantages, some of which are:

 • It is quite easy to set up: You can organize a conference call within seconds.
 • There is an option to record calls: You can record your virtual conference meetings for later review.
 • You don’t need to buy any additional hardware or even pay extra.

One of the many features MightyCall users enjoy for free.

Conference calls undoubtedly improve business since it saves you quite a lot of time. And time, they say, is money. You can link up two or more people during a conference call (for example, link up your technician to a client in order to directly address pressing issues).

If you wish to still be able to answer calls from work after business hours, MightyCall makes that possible. A lot of entrepreneurs of fast-growing businesses are always business conscious, not wanting to miss out on any potential transaction. If you are that type of entrepreneur, then after hours call routing is for you. You get to handle calls differently for business and non-business hours.

I’m sure by now you are ready to get your second phone number. And with all the features MightyCall has to offer, there’s only one rational choice for your business.
